NYPD Releases Internal Investigation on Egregious Activity of Officers

Force Admits Agency-Wide Moral Hazard, Amends Policies

Findings Decry Rampant Abuse, Fabricated Reports, and Misconduct

After much prodding from the news website Hell Gate, the New York Police Department (NYPD) has finally released the findings of an internal investigation into egregious activity by its officers.

The 36-page report, obtained by Hell Gate through a Freedom of Information Law request, paints a damning picture of rampant abuse, fabricated reports, and misconduct within the department.

The investigation, which was initiated in 2017, found that "a significant number" of NYPD officers had engaged in "egregious misconduct," including but not limited to:

  • Unlawful arrests
  • Excessive force
  • Racial profiling
  • Fabricated reports

The report also found that the NYPD had a "culture of silence" that allowed misconduct to go unchecked for years.

In response to the findings, the NYPD has announced a series of reforms, including:

  • New training for officers on use of force and bias
  • A new unit to investigate misconduct
  • A new policy requiring officers to report misconduct

The NYPD has also committed to working with community groups to rebuild trust.

The release of the internal investigation is a major step forward in addressing the NYPD's misconduct problem. However, it is important to remember that the reforms announced by the NYPD are only a first step. The department must now work to implement these reforms and ensure that they are effective in preventing misconduct in the future.

The NYPD's misconduct problem is a serious one, but it is not insurmountable. With the right reforms and the commitment of the NYPD, it is possible to build a department that is both fair and effective.
